History of department

Training of journalists at our university began in 2000. First group studying journalism was formed at the Faculty of Philology. Later Chair of Journalism was established, and it was replenished by qualified teaching staff.

The opening of the modern Campus building 17, in which there are audience and faculty offices, helped to bring the implementation of a long-standing dream of the journalism faculty in Belgorod.

The first Journalism Department in the Belgorod region was officially opened July 1, 2005. Department was headed by Doctor of Philology, Professor A.P. Korochensky, who previously worked at the Faculty of Philology and Journalism of Rostov State University. For ten years A.P. Korochensky led faculty, laying and maintaining a professional culture tradition, creative and responsible attitude to journalism.

Structure of department

Chair of journalism headed by doctor of philological sciences A.V. Polonsky provides scientific and educational-methodical management training of bachelors and masters in the fields of training 42.03.02 Journalism and 42.04.02 Journalism, as well as the training of highly qualified personnel (post-graduate students) in the field of training 42.06.01 The media and information library science (profile Journalism).

The organizational structure of the Department is supplemented with

  • Educational and scientific Medialaboratory equipped with computers with professional programs for editing video and audio, for designing periodicals and web sites, as well as with digital TV and photo equipment, recording and projection equipment;
  • Research and Education Center "Mediaperspektiva" realized on a contractual basis of additional education programs, research and consulting services.

Study at the department

There are different students studying journalism in BSU. Among them are the natives of Belgorod and the towns and villages of Belgorod region, students from other Russian regions: Chernozem, North Caucasus, Siberia and the Far East. There are also students and graduate students from the countries of near and far abroad countries - Ukraine, Moldova, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Morocco, Cape Verde.

Even before future entering the university students have the opportunity to meet with department and their future profession, attending classes Regional Media School, created with the assistance of the Belgorod regional organization of the Russian Union of Journalists. Students get acquainted with the peculiarities of preparation for the audition, getting the initial experience of cooperation with the media and interaction with the public relations services, meet with journalists practitioners. Media School organizes tours for its students to leading newspapers and TV and radio companies of Belgorod, the press service of the state and public organizations and advertising agencies.

Bachelor Education of Journalism in the direction of 42.03.02 field is made in four profiles: "Periodical Press", "International Journalism", "Multimedia Internet journalism", "Television". The main partner of the faculty in the training of journalists for television - a branch of VGTRK STRC Belgorod and ANO Publishing House Mir Belogoriya.

The depatment realizes four master's programs:

  • The journalist-researcher: an international perspective (2005, supervisor - Doctor of Philology, Professor A.P. Korochensky, only full-time education.);
  • Media and Intercultural Communication (Since 2008, supervisor - Doctor of Philology, Professor A.V. Polonsky - part-time and correspondence forms of training);
  • Cultural issues in the media (since 2010, supervisor - Doctor of Philology, Professor of the Moscow State University A.A. Tertychnyi - full-time and correspondence forms of training);
  • Communication Studies and Public Relations (since 2011, supervisor -. Doctor of Philosophy, Professor E.A. Kozhemyakin - full-time, part-time and correspondence forms of training).

Students of journalism are being published on the website NIU "BSU", involved in the issue of the university newspaper "News BSU" and student application of it NOTA BENE; Student radio "Bely Gus" and TV University "TUT" and also co-operate with the media of Belgorod and Belgorod region.

The basis of the development of the department is based on the close alliance of journalism education and practice. All students have practice in the media editorial, press services, advertising agencies and the state final examination requires to submit their creative files with publications that reflect the professional development throughout the study period. Many students of journalism are working with editorial boards and news services on a regular basis. The Faculty has agreements on creative collaboration with organizations of employers: STRC Belgorod, ANO Publishing House Mir Belogoriya, holding Belgorod-Media. Many students are involved in the preparation of youth programs, successfully cooperating with the SEC "Mir Belogoriya".

The department is constantly holding the meetings of Press Club, among guests of which were the governor of the Belgorod region E.S. Savchenko, newsmakers, prominent representatives of the media community, journalists, bloggers, experts in the field of advertising and PR.

Graduates of the department are employed in newspapers and magazines, TV and radio companies, news agencies, as well as government and corporate press services, advertising and public relations agencies in the state administration bodies of different levels. Faculty graduates are employed not only in Belgorod (including editors of leading regional media and the press service of the administration of the Belgorod region), but also in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Voronezh and other cities of Russia. For example, former students of the faculty are working in the capital's television channels - "Culture", "Russia-24", all-Russian "Channel Five". Employment of graduates in the specialty index journalism is one of the highest among the faculties and departments of journalism and Russia is 86-87%, which confirms the relevance and competitiveness of our graduates in the labor market.

Graduates and students of journalism Belgorod repeatedly became winners of national and regional professional journalistic competitions.

Graduate school

The department provides preparation of Russian and foreign citizens in the post-graduate training in the field of 42.06.01 Media and information library science (profile "Journalism"). Admission is carried out both on a budgetary basis, and on the contractual conditions.

During the existence of department journalism graduates and postgraduate candidates reserved 10 master's theses on the specialty "Journalism" and 6 - on the specialty "Russian language".

Scientific activity

The main direction of scientific activity of the of Journalism Department - "Discourse sciences and media criticism of modern media." Co-Heads of the direction - Doctor of Philology, Professor of Chair of Journalism, A.P. Korochensky and Doctor of Philology, Professor, Head of Department of Journalism, A.V. Polonsky. Leading researchers are also Ph.D., Head of the Chair of Communication studies, Public Relations and Advertising E.A. Kozhemyakin and Doctor of Philology, Professor of the Chair of Journalism M.Y. Kazak.

The dpartment within key scientific issues is developing following research areas: history of Belgorod journalism; history of foreign journalism; modern foreign media systems (comparative studies); media text theory; theory of genres of journalism; expressiveness of journalistic texts; functioning of language in mass communications; self-regulation of journalistic communities; Theory and practice of advertising and public relations; theory and practice of media education using media resources; The latest media; cultural issues in the media, mass media and intercultural communication, and others.

The active scientific life of department is reflected in the organization of international scientific conferences on topical problems of journalism and media education media criticism. One of the important areas of international activities at the department is the organization of international scientific forums. Since 2006, the international scientific-practical conference "Journalism and Media Education" is held regularly at the Department of Journalism. Within the framework of the established scientific tradition, in 2012 an international scientific-practical conference "Journalism of Post-Soviet republics: 20 years later". Two meetings were held in the framework of the international scientific symposium "Mass media and mass communication: the status of scientific and academic disciplines." The Departments scientific forums invariably involves scientists from the countries of CIS and foreign countries: Austria, Belarus, Germany, Egypt, Ukraine, Poland, Yemen, Jordan, Italy, Finland

The researchers of the Department successfully mastered such forms of scientific cooperation, such as seminars and workshops ( "Media criticism in modern journalism and Communication srudies" (2010), "Actual problems of improvement of conceptual and terminological apparatus of the science of journalism and mass communication" (2011); "problems updating theoretical and methodological basis of the science of journalism and mass communications"(2013), "mass media and mass communication: experience, problems and prospects"(2015) The ongoing faculty research forums invariably involves scientists from leading universities of Russia, as well as the countries of near and far abroad.

Since the Department foundation in 2005 there were issued 14 representative collections of scientific papers (including 3 Russian-Italian), published monographs, training manuals on journalism, advertising and public relations, published dozens of articles in Russian and foreign journals.

There is a student scientific-creative society headed by docent S.M. Narozhnaya. Students of the department are actively involved in research activities, repeatedly becoming winners of scientific conferences in Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, Voronezh State University and other institutions of higher education.

International relations

Department of Journalism operates internationally. Its main areas: training of foreign citizens in the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate studies; cooperation with foreign scientific and educational centers in the Republic of Belarus, Armenia, Poland, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands; participation in international scientific, academic and cultural projects and programs; exchanging of scientific publications, academic mobility of teachers and students.

Department of Journalism focuses on the development of academic mobility of teachers and students. Leading professors and docents have experience in research and teaching activities at universities near and far abroad. Professor A.P. Korochensky permanently teaching at the master's degree in journalism in high school for the arts in Sosnowiec (Poland), professor A.V. Polonsky - in the State University of Bergamo (Italy).

Teachers, graduate students and students of the department are actively involved in various international scientific congresses, conferences and seminars held not only in Russia but also abroad - in Belarus, Ukraine, Poland, Italy, Germany, being published in various international journals and collections of scientific works.

Social sphere

Journalism students repeatedly became winners of the All-Russian competition for Potanin Foundation scholarship, holders of the Presidential scholarship, the governor of the Belgorod region scholarship, increased scholarships for excellence in learning and creative activities.

There are also students from low-income families who receive social assistance. They receive support from the university in the form of social grants, additional payments, the priority of places in hostels and other benefits.

There are regularly held competitions for the best journalistic work. Results of creative contests are announced during the Department colorful festivals with the participation of employers. The annual May Festival of journalism, along with a dedication to the freshmen, the New Year holiday, the Open Day, the Russian press and television days - are among the most important social and cultural activities at the departent organized by the students themselves.

At the Department function the professional photography courses, courses effective business communication, which can be trained by the students of other faculties and schools of Belgorod. Students have excellent conditions for the development of creative abilities. Many of these students become an annual university-wide winners of competitions and parades.
