The University Pays Tribute to Veterans

University Square was the venue for a 'Victory Waltz' celebration, conducted in the traditional patriotic manner.

The Victory Waltz was attended by WWII veterans, students, teachers and University staff, and was organised by the Student Union and the BNRU Council of Veterans.
The event opened with an account of the heroism displayed by Soviet soldiers in the fight against the fascist invaders. Students were reminded that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Kursk, and all expressed their gratitude to the veterans who took part in that campaign in the summer of 1943.
Alexander Voronkin, the Vice-President of the BNRU Council of Veterans wished the young people a happy holiday, stressing that they are the successors of the traditions of their fathers and grandfathers, saying,
The Veterans Council send greetings to you on the eve of the Victory Day celebrations. We are proud that you represent the best traditions of peace, hard work, and knowledge. We wish you the best of health, because good health is the foundation of knowledge, success, and the prosperity of our immense motherland.
Professor Svetlana Ostrikova, Vice-Rector for Cultural and Educational Activities, took to the podium, addressing those present, saying,
This is the third year that University Square has hosted a Victory Waltz conducted by the students. Our students prove that younger generations remember this heroic feat. We are the heirs of their victory. Songs from the war years, songs about our great victory, and of course the dancing, is all evidence that we will never forget. Happy Victory Day, my dear friends!
The Victory Waltz saw different dances performed, among which were the Waltz, the Polka, the Krakowian Dance, the Quadrille, and the Tango. The audience enjoyed the dances immensely, with performances choreographed by 'Inspiration', who performed the ballroom dances, along with the 'Belogorochka' ensemble. The 'Joy' singers sang alongside the 'Heather Art Studio' and the '31st Region Collective'. Everyone sang along with the songs, and the veterans were invited to dance in the final waltz.
The festivities were rounded off with the soldiers' cheer 'Ura' in honour of the 73rd anniversary of the defeat of the Nazis and the end of the war, and the 75th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Kursk.
