Protecting Your Personal Data

Timed to coincide with International Personal Data Protection Day, final year law students were treated to a presentation from Maxim Demeshchenko, Deputy Head of our Regional Roskomnadzor (the Federal Media and Internet Regulator)

After some general advice about data security, Mr Demeshchenko outlined the 11 instances where it was permissible for the state to gather personal data on citizens. He illustrated his talk with hypothetical situations in which people's carelessness in their professional life can lead to bad consequences. He highlighted the hidden legal agreements that social networks employ to use your data without your knowledge.

His talk was followed by tips from Anastasia Abramova about how best to secure personal data. She paid particular attention to making sure that you only shared your data with verifiable companies. She also advised people to change their passwords fairly frequently, and use complex ones. Ms Abramova was recently elected Chair of the Youth Chamber of Roskomnadzor, part of the latter's commitment to including young people in their work to prevent abuse of the internet. Ms Abramova is a first year law student at Belgorod State University.
