Research conducted at Belgorod State University proved relevance of genetic factors in female reproductive system disorders

BelSU scientists in collaboration with the Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Viktor Radzinsky identified genes for growth factors that increase the risk of uterine fibroids in combination with endometrial hyperplasia

About one thousand patients of St. Joasaph Belgorod Regional Clinical Hospital were involved in the experimental study 193 women suffering from uterine fibroids combined with endometrial hyperplasia and 789 healthy women who underwent the planned medical examination at Perinatal Center. The chief research executor was Oksana Altukhova, the Head of the Gynecological Department of Perinatal Center, Associate Professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The study of polymorphic loci of growth factors genes was conducted by polymerase chain reaction method involving oligonucleotide primers and probes.

Speaking about the research relevance, the Head of BelSU Department of Biomedical Disciplines Professor Mikhail Churnosov emphasized that combined proliferative uterus diseases are not only hard to cure, but can also entail serious medical and social consequences for patients suffering from reproductive disorders and dependent on the need for permanent treatment.

The research proved that the combination of four genetic markers - epidermal, transforming, insulin-like growth factors and fibroblast growth factor receptor increase risk to development of uterine fibroids combined with endometrial hyperplasia.
