Educating the Youth on Data Protection

Law student Anastasia Abramova, has been elected to the Chair of the Central Federal District Youth Forum, which is sponsored by the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor)

Roskomnadzor is mainly known as the de facto State Censor, but in recent years it has undertaken a difficult if not impossible task the protection of personal data. Educating the public to the hazards of big data sharing is a Sisyphean task, but it is part of Roskomnadzor's role in protecting the Russian public from harmful on-line material. To this end, it has sponsored the Youth Forum movements efforts to educate and inform the public, with a focus on youth.

Ms Abramova and her colleagues identified Data Protection as a priority in their general aim of the protection of young people's legal rights. She explained,

Each of us is generating personal data, but not everyone knows how to protect themselves, and what activities may result in the leakage of personal information. In a rapidly developing big data society, this knowledge is a necessity. It is essential that we educate schoolchildren and students about legal and security matters, as they often post their personal information, with scant regard for the consequences. Our organisation has set itself the task of reducing the amount of fraudulent behaviour that results from irresponsible and ignorant dissemination of personal data.

She went on to talk about the program of activities planned for 2019 in order to achieve their goals. BNRU aims to be at the forefront of this campaign.
